The title of this villancico from the mountains of western Spain literally translates as “The Virgin Was a Laundress.” From the 15th to the 18th century, villancicos were popular songs, with rustic themes, derived from medieval dances. The church adopted the form for devotional purposes, often using texts to help converts relate to religious teachings. (In the 20th century, the term “villancico” came to mean a Spanish Christmas carol.)
