about

In 1843, the parish priest of Roquemaure asked writer and wine merchant Placide Cappeau, a socialist-leaning French Republican and atheist who lost a hand to a shooting accident as a child, to write a piece celebrating the recent renovation of the church organ. Four years later, his poem “Minuit Chrétiens” was set to music by composer Adolphe Adam. Cappeau’s lyrics about equality, freedom, and brotherhood led the composer to deem it “la Marseillaise religieuse”(the religious Marseillaise). Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight wrote the English lyrics in 1855.

LYRICS

Peuple debout! Chante ta délivrance,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur,
Noël, Noël, chantons le Rédempteur!

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
'Til He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born;
O night divine, O night, O night Divine.
