Inspired by the story of early 20th century German Expressionist painter Gabriele Münter. In an era when women were barred from art school, she studied—and fell in love with—artist Wassily Kandinsky, who repeatedly promised marriage. After living and working together for over a decade, Kandinsky returned to Russia and married a younger woman, throwing Münter into a deep depression. Recovering, she continued to experiment with shifting styles, painting with bold colors and often imbuing mundane subjects with subtle but profound emotion. The Nazis denounced the work of Münter and her colleagues as degenerate, and she hid many of their paintings—including Kandinsky's—during World War II, saving them from destruction.
lyrics
Alone within these four gray walls
Alone among a thousand faces
Alone with you while my heart falls
in love with love in moonlit spaces
How tangible this time with you
How very present seem your lips
But you are only passing through
Like rain between my fingertips
But mine is not to wonder why
Mine is but to dance and fly
Fleeting friendship doesn’t last
Equally elusive, love’s elation
The future doesn’t yet exist, the past
is open to interpretation
This moment, only this, is mine
Only this belongs to me
If there exists a thing divine
This moment, my divinity
But mine is not to wonder why
Mine is but to dance and fly
